Pomade Review - Suavecito Firme Hold

I am a huge fan of water soluble hair products. And there are many hair products out there that have different properties, different level of holds, that work well with different hair types. And everyone would know what works well with their hair and what doesn't. And I am always looking for that special quality in a hair product that works especially well with my hair type - thin asian hair.

Always wanting to try something new and different, I decided to get Suavecito Firme Hold Pomade. Suavecito, translating to suave or smoothly in Spanish, prides itself in its products' water solubility and being able to hold tight like wax and shines like grease pomade.

Suavecito Firme Hold made in Santa Ana, CA, USA, comes in a 4oz (113.39g) plastic container. And when opened, the smell of freshly washed linen and a hint of manly deodorant would great your senses.   It is actually one of my favourite, if not my most favourite smell of all. It has a fresh scent that would most certainly bright up your morning when you going about your routine.

Suavecito Firme Hold is made up of  Water, Ceteareth-25, Glycerin, PEG-7 Glycerin, Cocoate, Propylene,  Glycol, PEG 40 Hydogentated Castor Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), DMDM Hydrated Caramel, Simeththicone, PVP, PEG 8 Beeswax, Methylparaben, Palysorbate 20. With all these ingredients makes Suavecito behave very differently from other water soluble pomades.

*I'm terribly sorry for the terrible pictures.
Easy to apply and re-comb, Suavecito has a good medium to strong hold, dries up and hardens quickly. However, that only happens when you apply it to dry hair. And if you don't like your hair all hard and stiff, but wavy, you can choose to apply Suavecito to damp hair, with lesser holding strength. Suavecito would be able to hold up to the heat and humidity of Singapore's weather, but its always wise to bring a comb out where ever you go, in less of late need to re-comb.

You can get this product at Heist's Panic room, or tuck shop and Sundry supplies.

Pomade Review - Layrite Super Hold

Source: http://heist.com.sg/thevaultIII/the-panic-room/layrite-super-hold-pomade.html
*I had to get the image off the internet because the photograph I took of it looks awful

One of the most important factors I look for when selecting pomade is its hold. I'm sure you folks out there would have the same thing in mind when selecting your styling product. Being a big fan of water soluble pomades, I decided to try out Layrite Super Hold.

A quick History lesson: The inventor of Layrite - Donnie Hawley saw a problem when he was a barber. He would have customers step up into his chair with hair smothered in petroleum grease. Not being able to wash it all off, things were made  more difficult of Hawley because he did not have to a proper "canvas" to work on.
Hawley then decided experiment with different formulas of water soluble pomades, and took the best feature from the products that he likes to work with, yet maintaining the ability to wash it off with just water. That is why the tag line, "Pomades that holds like a wax yet washes out like gel!" is so confidently stamped on every product.

Layrite Super Hold comes in a plastic 4oz container.  When opened, the pleasant smell of the pomade reminds me of tapioca paste, and have to same texture that resembles yam paste.  In essence, the pleasant smell would be something your lady would appreciate.

Layrite Super Hold is made up of Water, Ceteareth-25, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocate, Polysorbate 20, PVP,  Polysorbate Glycol, PEG-7 Hydronated Castor Oil, PEG-8 bees wax, fragrance, PEG-8 Methicone, DMDM hydrantoin, Methylparaden, Red (CI 14700), Yellow 5 ( CI 19140)

In short, Layrite Super Hold is made up of a huge amount of chemicals, so please be careful when applying, do not apply it to your scalp. You don't want to be suffering from early stages of hair loss.

This product has a good amount of hold. It works perfectly for folks who use the wet-comb method  to fashion their hair. Layrite Super Hold also works perfectly with thin asian hair like mine, giving it volume as you fashion your hair to whatever you desire.

It is also able to hold up when exposed to a certain level of heat. I was able to stand beside flames during a field cooking session and also stand under the sun without having to worry about the pomp. It would also be easy to re-comb your hair again (with water) if the unfortunate were to happen.

You can get your product from the Hiest's Panic Room.

Product Review - Kent Foldable Comb

Some people often overlook the importance of having a good comb. Not only does the comb help style or fashion hair when needed, it spreads natural oils throughout the hair shaft and gets rid of any dirt. Hence keeping it cleaner and softer.

And my choice of comb would be the Kent Foldable Comb ( Introduced to me by a friend, Andre G.M.H) . The mens' foldable pocket comb is a 100mm fine toothed folding comb which comes with a pocket clip. Kent brushes established in 1777 has made its mark on the industry by having a wide range and depth of products.

The foldable comb is sturdy, reliable and convenient.  Not like any other combs that you see seniors (ahpeks and uncles) carry in their back pocket. The teeth of the comb does not break easily,  and it can comb through hair smothered in pomade rather smoothly. With my thin Chinese-Asian hair, a comb would decide the fate of my hair. And Kent's foldable comb suits me just fine.

The pocket clip comes in handy for me at time when I do not bring my wallet out. Other than securing the comb to the seams of your pocket, it can be used as a money or card clip.

Kent combs can be found all over our little island in shops like Watsons and Mustafa Center. Go for adventures, because you might not know what you will be able to find.

Pomade Review - Tancho Pomade

I went on an adventure to Mustafa Center last week, looking for something new. And I stumbled upon a pomade that everyone would use back in the day. Showing my dad my loot for the day, my dad was surprised to see that Tancho Pomade could still be found in local stores.

Tancho pomade is made up Castor oil, Japan wax (????), fragrance, VHT, D&C Green No.6 (CI.61565), D&C Yellow No.11 (CI.47000). And it prides itself in it being a 'Pure Vegetable Nourishing Pomade'. Castor oil, being tasteless and odorless, is seen to have medicinal properties, and also prevents hair loss.

Upon opening, you would see a plastic seal which proves that the products has not been tampered with, and acts as a seal to seal in the freshness. The pomade gives off a slight menthol-peppermint smell and a slight whiff of "old manliness" (sorry for the terrible photograph, with the angpow and all)

Scooping some of the pomade into my hands, Tancho Pomade offers a different texture as compared to Uppercut or Layrite - somewhat much, much more oily and softer. The pomade was easy to spread onto my palms, and could be applied to my hair without much effort.
I thought that Tancho Pomade would not hold up as well as other more well known pomades. But I was proved wrong. It gave my hair a reasonable amount of hold, and it held my short asian spikes down. However, it did not hold too well when exposed to heat for a period of time. But a comb always comes in handy. I would highly recommend this product for gentlemen who appreciates the backcomb and slick sides.

Pomade Review - Dr. Rubin's

Dr. Rubin's Firm Pomade. I was a little afraid to venture into petroleum based pomades, because I have only been using water soluble ones like Layrite and Uppercut Deluxe.  Dr. Rubin's Firm Pomade is the first petroleum based pomade I have purchased (from Heist's Panic Room)

Dr. Rubin's Firm Pomade is made up of: Beeswax, jojoba oil, almond oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly and fragrance. Dr. Rubin's takes pride in its hard assurance of being 100% natural, with no additives, preservatives or artificial anything.  The pomade is served to you in a 36m brass like tin. Once opened, you will be greeted with a sweet smelling fragrance of coconut and vanilla.

I was used to being able to get pomade out of its container with ease. But for Dr. Rubin's one needs to put in extra effort to get pomade out of the tin. Heat from the friction after spreading pomade into my palms soften the pomade enough for it to be applied to my hair.

After testing it on Chinese New Year's Eve - going through the humidity of the dinner table, with the steam boat and poor air circulation, Dr. Rubin's Firm Pomade stood up to the test. It softened up a little, but still managed to hold my hair in place, even my short sides which tend to spike up stayed down. I would recommend this for Singapore's humid and unpredictable weather, but please carry a comb with you.

One of the main reasons of why I was afraid to venture into petroleum based pomades is because of the fact that it would be a challenge to wash it off. And being an Asian, with naturally thin hair, not being able to wash off products from my hair gets me paranoid, which also gets me thinking that I would end up bald.  Boooy was I wrong! I managed to wash off the pomade with warm (close to hot) water, conditioner and two(2) washes of shampoo.
